Problems that Bridge Theory and Application
Speaker: Nell Sedransk, National Institute of Statistical Sciences
Abstract: Problems in statistical science often arise out of substantive applications and require theoretical development to yield satisfactory solution. Neither the application nor the theory alone defines the problem. Several examples from research collaborations illustrate the interplay of application and theory. What makes a problem difficult? How valuable is a full, theoretical solution? What are the keys to defining a framework for solution? Different kinds of these difficult problems are characterized in terms of these key elements. Two in particular are examined in greater detail and lead to open questions for continuing work.
